Real wedding: Rebecca and James in Lake Como
A real wedding on Lake Como, Italy. Immerse yourself in the romantic tale of Rebecca and James, as they say 'I do' against the breathtaking backdrop of Villa Regina Teodolinda.
In the Summer of 2023, I was extremely lucky to be able to film Rebecca and James’ special day at Villa Regina Teodolinda, on Lake Como, Italy. It was very much a ‘pinch me’ moment. As a cinematic wedding videographer, I put a big emphasis on the location and surroundings, and a destination wedding is something that truly brings my style to life. Lake Como is a videographer’s dream, and something I was very excited to be a part of.
Rebecca and James' destination wedding was nothing short of a fairy tale. The picturesque setting, the carefully curated details, and the undeniable love between the couple created an atmosphere that was both magical and unforgettable. Something I felt extremely privileged to be able to film.
Rebecca and James are both English, and live in London. They’re both well travelled, so it was no surprise that they chose Italy and Lake Como as the backdrop to tie the knot. During their travels, they’ve built lifelong friendships, and had guests travelling all the way from America or even New Zealand for their big day. Their decision to host a destination wedding allowed them to curate an intimate guest list, which made their day even more special as only their their closest loved ones were there.
Villa Regina Teodolinda
When you think about a Lake Como wedding, your mind instantly goes to a beautiful, exclusive villa that overlooks the Lake and the Alps. That’s precisely what this exclusive wedding venue provides. As soon as I entered the Villa, it became clear that this is no ordinary place — it is a dream location for a destination wedding. You can feel its heritage and history.
It’s not everyday you get to film someone’s special day in Lake Como. I couldn’t miss this opportunity to capture drone footage of the venue and the Lake — something that really elevates the look and feel of the end product, and makes the wedding look like an actual film. The opening scene of their wedding film instantly draws you into this amazing scenery: water and mountains. Pure bliss.
Villa Regina Teodolinda is based in Laglio, a little village located in the southern branch, and one of the narrowest points of Lake Como. It has a beautiful jetty, so lakeside access is really easy if you want to travel to and from the Villa by water. This is something I integrated throughout their wedding film. I feel strongly that I have to incorporate the local nuance, as this is what makes the location unique. In this particular case, with the venue overlooking this beautiful backdrop, I captured boats navigating the waters of Lake Como. This instantly adds motion to the film, and keeps reminding you of this special place.
The Villa has multiple ‘levels’, which means you can have a difference experience throughout the day. All of them are portrayed in the film, at different points. I wanted to tell a story from each and every location within the Villa, like a film would.
Whether it’s the suites for bridal preparation inside the Villa, the main terrace for the wedding reception, the garden for the wedding ceremony, or the jetty for couple portraits. All play a different role in telling the story of Rebecca and James’ day.

Morning preparation
Rebecca’s bridal preparation took place in one of the 7 amazing suites at the Villa, which is captured in their wedding film. The morning was really calm and relaxed, and it was amazing to think that you could see views of the Lake from every window.
Rebecca wore the most beautiful wedding gown from Prea James Bridal, a dress that really suited her and the vision she had for the day: timeless elegance in Italy.
During the morning preparation, I kept navigating the different levels of the Villa, constantly capturing small details of the venue, James and his groomsmen, or him welcoming guests as they arrive.
A few of Rebecca friends came up to the suite to see her during bridal prep, some of which were speechless at the sight of their lifelong friend in her stunning wedding dress.
The ceremony
The ceremony took place in the Villa's picturesque garden, adorned with flowers in a palette of soft pastels. The couple incorporated personalised touches into the ceremony: Rebecca and James’ long term friend held the ceremony, which was perfect as he crafted a beautiful speech that felt personal and intimate. It was a true insight into what Rebecca and James are like, both as friends, and as a couple: loving, adventurous, caring. A truly special moment, surrounded by their nearest and dearest.
This felt like a magical time for me. Against the backdrop of the lake and surrounded by towering cypress trees, Rebecca and James exchanged their vows which, naturally, I captured in their wedding film. I wanted to film their ceremony as if I was a guest, but with this extra creative and artistic touch. For this reason, I positioned a camera at the back of the aisle, which is essentially the view that most of their guests will have had: the couple, holding hands, with nothing but mountains and blue sky behind them.
The Reception
Following confetti and drinks, the reception unfolded on the villa's terrace, offering guests a front-row seat to the breathtaking sunset over Lake Como. The tables were adorned with elegant floral arrangements which set the stage for a night of laughter, heartfelt toasts, and joyful celebration.
Rebecca had orchestrated everything, and her vision was stunning. Understated, but elegant and stylish. It really was perfect, as she let the venue and surroundings do the talking.
The menu featured a curated selection of Italian delicacies, paying homage to the local cuisine. Guests savoured every bite while sipping on fine wines, embracing the flavours of the region.
As the couple and their guests enjoyed their dinner, I saw this as a final opportunity to get creative, and capture their day from a different perspective. So, of course, I decided to fly my drone one last time. Sometimes, in a wedding film, you need that one shot, that one frame that connects the different parts of the day, or transports you from one location to the next. So I filmed the venue from up top, essentially adding an extra dimension to the wedding reception, without it being too intrusive.
Couple Portraits
Following the wedding ceremony, and after they’d had time to see their guests, we borrowed the couple for about 15mn to capture couple portraits. They had elected not to hire a private boat, as they wanted to ensure they had time to enjoy their guests.
However, to incorporate this amazing scenery into the wedding film, I felt we needed the couple on the jetty, with nothing but water and boats behind them. The frames I selected for their film tell a story of love: the stolen glances, the touch of hands, the gentle kisses on the head. All those small moments, against a picture-perfect backdrop, helped me craft a narrative that was unique to them.
The wedding film
When discussing their vision for their wedding film with Rebecca and James, we spoke about timeless Italian elegance. They didn’t want a quintessential British wedding. They wanted the film to encapsulate the unique location they had chosen for the day, with them at the center of it.
As a Destination Wedding Videographer, I also felt like I needed to let Lake Como do the talking. Rebecca and James are both adventurous and fun, so their film needed to be romantic, but not soppy. It needed to have energy, but also be refined.
The choice of music was key. I wanted to keep within the Italian theme, so naturally I elected a Classical, Cinematic soundtrack with cello and violin. Instruments that align with the local culture.
Their wedding film delivers on their vision: a story of love and friendship, that embraces the destination.

Choosing the Perfect Destination Wedding Location: A Videographer's Guide
Choosing the perfect destination wedding location can be a bit overwhelming when planning your dream wedding abroad. Read this blog to understand how my wedding videography approach can help you align your vision with your perfect venue.
For many of my couples, a destination wedding is the perfect opportunity to reunite with their nearest and dearest in a unique location. For couples living abroad, it also makes a lot of sense to have every travel to a particular venue. And, naturally, exchanging vows in a stunning location far from home, surrounded by breathtaking scenery and immersed in the culture of a foreign land, is nothing short of magical.
As a cinematic wedding videographer, I play a crucial role in bringing this dream to life. I’m tasked with capturing the essence of the destination, as well as the love story of the couple in an artistic and creative way. My style of cinematography means I do more than just capture the events of the day – I tell a full story of the wedding, and the location in which you’re tying the knot is central to this.
One of the most significant decisions my couples face when planning a destination wedding is choosing the perfect location. The venue and destination not only sets the stage for their special day but also profoundly influences my approach as a cinematographer, and the final wedding film’s visual and emotional impact. So this got me thinking: how can I help couples select the ideal destination for their wedding, and what are some of the factors I’d think about when filming your day.
The Couple's Vision
Every couple has a unique vision for their dream wedding, and understanding their vision is paramount to my work. Some couples envision a tropical beach wedding with soft sands and crystal-clear waters, while others are drawn to the romantic charm of historic European cities or the rugged grandeur of mountain landscapes. It's essential to align their vision with my videography style and approach that will best bring it to life.
What this means for me is that I need to deliver a wedding film that embraces the local culture and surroundings. Again, my films are never just a collection of nice scenes; I aim to tell the story of your day, so understanding my couples’ vision is something I feel passionate about. Ultimately, I want the film to be theirs. The creative and artistic touch is mine, but the day is theirs, so I’ll always have their unique vision in mind.
Scenic Beauty
The natural beauty of the destination is often a significant factor in the decision-making process. For example, some couples will naturally be drawn to Lake Como, in Italy. For others, a château in France. When discussing locations with my couples, I always discuss the natural beauty that surrounds their chosen location. Are there iconic landscapes, architectural marvels, or cultural elements they wish to incorporate into their video? The setting and surroundings not only enhance the visual appeal of the film, but also adds depth and context to the storytelling.
Cultural Significance
The cultural significance of the destination can infuse depth and authenticity into the wedding film. This is key to my style of videography, as I always incorporate local traditions, rituals, or elements into their wedding, making the video a reflection of the destination's cultural richness. This can be a powerful way to tell a more profound and resonant story.
Selecting the perfect destination for a wedding is a key decision that sets the stage for a memorable celebration. As a wedding videographer, my role in this process is pivotal, as the destination significantly influences the visual and emotional elements of my work. A well-chosen destination not only enhances the visual beauty of the wedding video but also enriches the storytelling and narrative.
Ultimately, the location you choose for your wedding needs to be an extension of your couple. This is the only way for you to feel like you can have your dream wedding day.

Destination weddings aren't just a trend; they're a passport to an stress-free, exotic, and unforgettable wedding experience. While they might not be for everyone, if you've got a sense of adventure and a taste for the extraordinary, getting married abroad could be the perfect choice for your special day. So pack your bags, say your "I do's" in paradise, and toast to a lifetime of adventure, love, and laughter!
In this article, we're about to embark on a whirlwind adventure through the wonderful world of destination weddings. Why should you choose to jet-off for your special day? Let me count the ways!
1. Unique location makes for unique memories
When you opt for a destination wedding, you're not just choosing a venue; you're selecting a backdrop that will forever be etched into your love story. Whether it's a pristine beach, a historic European castle, or a lush rainforest, your destination will set the scene for your magical day.
2. Quality time with your loved ones
A hometown wedding often leaves you scrambling to meet and greet all your guests. With a destination wedding, you're more likely to have quality time with a smaller, select group of friends and family. It's like a mini-vacation, but with the people you cherish most.
3. Honeymoon and Wedding in One
You can have your wedding cake and eat it too—literally! When you choose a destination wedding, your honeymoon destination is conveniently built-in. After the ceremony, why not kick off your honeymoon with a celebratory splash in the same turquoise waters where you said, "I do"?
4. Guest experience
For your guests, a destination wedding is a thrilling adventure. They get to explore a new place, enjoy local cuisine, and experience a vacation they won't soon forget. It's like a wedding and vacation rolled into one for them as well!
5. Picture perfect backdrop
There's no denying that destination weddings offer stunning natural backdrops for your wedding photos. Whether you choose a château in France, a beach in the Spain, or a vineyard in Tuscany, you'll have Instagram-worthy shots for days. Your wedding film will be nothing short of spectacular.
6. International love story
Lastly, a destination wedding is a symbolic start to your journey as a married couple. You're making your union official in a place that's foreign to both of you, emphasizing the adventure that awaits in your life together.
7. Easy elopement
Who said you had to invite anyone at all? A destination wedding allows you to elope without hurting anyone's feelings. Just grab your significant other and go! Your wedding can be as intimate as you desire.
8. Theme options galore
Destination weddings offer incredible thematic possibilities. You can choose a theme that matches the location, such as a beach-themed wedding by the sea or a rustic wedding in a countryside vineyard. The options are diverse.
9. Pure intimacy
For some, a destination wedding is an opportunity get away from life, and focus on your relationship. An international celebration of your love, in a different country, can lend itsel well to a much smaller ceremonies. It could even be just the two of you.
10. Because getting married at home is overrated
Now, I get it, a destination wedding isn’t for everybody. Whilst there are many reasons you’d want to travel to Italy, Spain or France to tie the knot, I’m sure it will fill some couples with anxiety thinking about planning a wedding in a foreign country. But, equally, I don’t think you’ll ever plan something as rewarding as a destination wedding. Destination weddings are more than just a trend; they're an experience that combines love, adventure, and, of course, a tropical breeze.
From unique locations to less stress, more fun, and picture-perfect photos, destination weddings offer an unforgettable experience that's hard to replicate with a hometown ceremony. So, pack your bags, grab your loved one's hand, and embark on the destination wedding of your dreams. It's time to make your "I do's" an adventure to remember!
Instagram Reels vs. Films for Wedding Videography
For wedding videographers, the opportunities for content creation have become endless these days. The choices for capturing, and more importantly, for presenting the magical moments of a couple’s special day have expanded significantly.
For wedding videographers, the opportunities for content creation have become endless these days. The choices for capturing, and more importantly, for presenting the magical moments of a couple’s special day have expanded significantly.
Over the past 5 years, social media has taken such a huge part in our lives, that new formats like YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels have emerged as additional formats to consider, alongside your typical wedding film.
When considering what platform and format to use, I always ask myself: what story am I trying to tell. These are some of my findings and learnings.
Instagram Reels: The Essence of Brevity
For an Instagram Reel to be effective, it needs to be under 1 minute. That is, by and large, the amount of time Instagram’s algorithm gives you, as a content creator, to deliver an engaging video to your audience. A single minute goes really quickly, so it’s hard to fully visualise the experience you had on a wedding day in less than 60 seconds.
My work is all about sequencing. I setup a shot, as a way to lead the audience into the next frame, which works really well in a wedding film, but I don’t have that luxury on Instagram, as it needs to be a lot more fast paced.
Reels are awesome to present the best clips of the day. With their concise format, Reels excel at delivering bite-sized snippets that encapsulate the most significant moments in a visually appealing way. Think of it as a portfolio: you’re showing the 20-25 best clips that you’ve recorded of your couple, their venue, and their guests. But it’s also harder to convey emotions, because a Reel mainly uses music, and there’s little to no sound design (which, as I’ve discussed on my cinematic wedding videography page, is a key element to a good wedding film).
And finally, Reels are hard to put together because, as a wedding videographer, we shoot landscape mode all day. The Instagram Reel format works really well in a portrait mode, so some of the shots you’ve framed nicely to work in your final edit, might not land themselves well to being cropped.
Here are 4 reasons I use Instagram Reels (or YouTube Shorts):
Quick and Shareable: Their short duration makes them easy to watch, and quickly put together. You can share some of the best clips from the day with your couples the day after their wedding.
Experiment to find your nice: To me, Reels allow videographers to experiment with new video editing techniques, or music that you may not want to use ina film. This can result in captivating and attention-grabbing content that resonates with younger audiences.
Emphasis on your best work: Reels are ideal for showcasing the best part of the wedding. You can create a Reel from any wedding, because you don’t need the speeches or ceremony to support the narrative. The main ambition is to create something engaging, without investing too much time.
Interaction and Engagement: Social media platforms foster interaction through likes, comments, and shares. Reels generate engagement, and engagement generate exposure. Reels are a great way to increase your profile online.
Wedding films: Unfolding the epic narrative
On the opposite end of the spectrum, you have your wedding film (whether highlight or feature). That’s really where the magic happens. The actual length of your wedding film is something you’ll want to experiment with, and I find that what works for other videographers might not necessarily be a good fit for me. I like to tell a story, and I find that a highlight film of around 5mn is perfect. It’s the ultimate blend of perfect shots, captivating story-telling, and a good length to keep the audience engaged.
With a wedding film, you’ll focus a lot more on the story of the day, than you will on selecting on the best clips. This may mean, sometimes, that you will include particular frames that are there to setup a part of the story, even if it’s not a shot that you’re in love with. It needs to work as part of a whole sequence.
The great thing about using Instagram Reels is that you already have a series of shots you can use in your wedding film. Think of your Reel as the early stages of culling your footage. It allows you to quickly remember what clips you have to play with, and elevate the emotion by building a strong narrative around it.
Choosing the right format
I think both Instagram Reels (or YouTube Shorts) and your wedding film compliment each other. I don’t think you need to pick one over the other. You just need to be mindful of your primary audience, and what aspects of the wedding are most important to you and the couple.
If you’re looking at your Instagram account as a portfolio, then Reels are perfect as you only select the best bits. If you’re active on social media, and enjoy sharing content online, then Reels are the best way to engage with couples.
If you focus on the story-telling, however, the format is likely too short. And I also believe that Instagram may become intimidating to couples. They might think you’re “out of their league”, because the way you portray yourself on social media is not attainable, or not something they can afford (just a thought!).
Whichever platform you choose, both formats have the power to immortalise the couple’s special day, and I think they complement each other when used well.
