Dorja and Mike’s Elopement

Dorja and Mike have a unique story. Dorja is Croatian. Mike is Scottish, and they met each other for the first time in 2017, in Dundee, Scotland, where she worked during her second year at University. Before long, they were off on their first date which marked the beginning of their journey together. They built a life, a home in Dundee, and a future together that they love. Like most couples, they faced challenges. They tackled long distance relationship early doors, when Dorja moved to Spain for her studies, and also faced lockdown together and the inability to see their family. This was particularly hard for Dorja, but she always followed her heart.

Their elopement is a reflection of who they are as a couple: intimate, and surrounded only by the closest to them. Only 13 guests made their way to Scotland, with Dorja’s family travelling all the way from Croatia.

Their elopement film is an epic story of love. It’s a story about time: the past, the present, and the future. It’s about their unbreakable bond – their long-distance relationship only solidified their connection. It’s a story of love and building each other up to become the best version of yourself. This is a unique wedding film, and very intimate look into Dorja and Mike’s story, which I felt extremely lucky to be a part of.

I got goosebumps. It is absolutely magical”

This was my first time filming a wedding in Scotland, so I was very excited when Dorja and Mike contacted me for their micro-wedding in the Scottish Highlands. As a UK and Destination wedding filmmaker, I always strive to deliver cinematic films that incorporate every element of my couples’ day, and the location is always something I feel passionate about. I knew Scotland would allow me to build a story that fitted the couple's personality.

The location of their wedding, in the Scottish Highlands, was nothing short of spectacular. Firstly, the area itself is a wedding filmmaker’s dream. The venue itself, St Marys’ Space is a converted church, now recording studio and wedding venue for elopements and micro-weddings. This heritage is shows in every single shot of the venue, with each shot having been framed to tell the story of this unique place.

There is so much to capture, and the surrounding mountains add so much depth and character, which I made sure to capture. We also had a few moments with the couple in Glencoe, an area well-known for mountaineering and hillwalking. The most epic of setting, which truly helps build the story of their day.

Dorja and Mike fully aligned with my creative vision, and trusted me completely with their wedding film. She had planned her elopement to feel intimate and adventurous. In her own words, “we both trust you Joce that you are going to be able to catch those looks that convey a lot throughout the day.” They also wanted the moodiness of the Scottish highlands to be captured, as well as the rustic feel of the venue.

I’m beyond grateful that they trusted me with their wedding film.

We’re both beaming. You’ve captured the day so beautifully. We couldn’t be happier!
